The mission of "Chang e 3" will be the second phase of the Chinese space program Chinese Lunar Exploration Program (CLEP). This is a large-scale program on lunar exploration of the Chinese spacecraft, and eventually the Chinese astronauts.

Unmanned space vehicles "Chang e 1" and "Chang e 2" were successfully launched in 2007 and 2010 respectively.

The launch of the first two spacecraft series Chang e became the first phase of the Chinese program on lunar exploration. The launch of the third unit of this series will be the second phase of the programme.

It is planned that "Chang e 3" will be launched using rocket Long March 3B with China's Xichang launch site.
